    ACM Status Update

    Gearbox Software have given out a little bit of information today about the status of ALIENS: Colonial Marines. Randy Pitchford spoke to CVG and told them:
    "great things afoot".
     
    "I know that there hasn't been much talk about what we're doing for awhile and that more details would be very juicy. Like so many people, I've been patient for years to finally be able to play this game and now that I'm actually involved in the creation of it I can tell you that it's extremely challenging to continue to be patient as it develops,"
     
    "I want to tell all! But I can't. But I can say that we are working hard and that there are great things afoot and I know that when the time is right, Sega will be excited to share more details about the game. Until that time, I guess the only thing anyone can do is just keep pressuring Gearbox and Sega to spill more beans. Maybe one of us will eventually crack."
     
    "I love Aliens and I love Gearbox Software's Aliens: Colonial Marines. I am extremely committed to the game and I'm very confident in Sega's commitment to the Aliens brand and to our game.”
     
    "I can imagine that there are a LOT of Aliens fans out there just like me that feel we've been waiting for our true Aliens game since we first saw the film and now that we know it's in development, we want it NOW!"
     
    Too right Randy, we do want it NOW!
     
    Apparently there will be a new interview with the man of magic coming soon to CVG. It doesn't say what the interview is about, but its definitely worth keeping our eyes peeled for.

    High Resolution Screens

    Locusta and Takhen from the Gearbox forum, both found some high resolution shots of the previously released screens. In them there's a lot of extra detail that couldn't be made out clearly before, for instance:-

    Possible ACM Screens?

    Back in March 09, Takhen a Gearbox regular discovered two unrefined images that appear to be from ALIENS: Colonial Marines on photobucket. At the time the images couldn’t be verified by Gearbox, so its still very possible that these could be fake and not from the game at all. We will probably never find out, but here are the screens anyway. You guys can make up your own minds.
     
     
    Both screens look like they have been taken in the same area, and show disembodied android legs just in front of a marine APC.

    Game Assets

    A Gearbox forum member, Takhen has been doing some thorough investigative work and checking out artist portfolios online and uncovering what appears to be assets for the game. Below are several images from different sources, of what looks like model and visual effects work for the game.

    Forum Highlights 03

    Its been a while since I did the last forum highlights, mostly because we haven’t really heard much talk from the developers to warrant one. But in the last few weeks we have had a little activity from the developers in the Aliens section of the Gearbox forums.
     
    So on to the highlights...
     
    Posted by ikarop: How much time will you be doing xeno-critters? Is the ACM Gbx team already focused on the game or just part? Are you just finishing the game or redoing stuff?
     
    grbxdesign (Lorin Wood, senior Concept Designer on ACM): Well, first off, I am a full-time designer in-house for the company. Been here since the end of last year, though I do contract work outside of the company in my off-hours. Not sure about the official logo on my profile. I logged in via iPod last night. I'll figure it out eventually.
     
    Anyway, from our Game Informer article last year you may know we had Syd Mead and Craig Mullins do some broad-stroke design and visualization, which was pretty cool. Let your imagination run wild with that. Syd's focus was to design the rest of the interior of the Sulaco that wasn't seen in the film.
     
    As far as our focus, we are obviously working first to get Borderlands done, so there are still a few people polishing that off, while a nice portion are focused on Aliens, myself included. Other than that, can't say much else...yet.

    grbxdesign: Well, coming from a film background I appreciate each Alien movie differently as well as each filmmaker who made them. I'm a huge Cameron fan, so obviously I love the second film, but Ridley Scott started this franchise and he's also a master filmmaker. I'm also an admirer of Fincher. Compound all of this with me being a very forgiving audience member and having an understanding of what it takes to make films like these, I have a different perspective than most and find it hard to favor one over the other. That is, unless it REALLY sucks. Like AVP, for example. At least I didn't pay for that one, but I did lose two hours of my life. The Vanilla Coke was good. See, I'm a glass-half-full kinda guy.

    Borderlands is definitely coming out before years end and after that it's up to Randy and Sega to decide when they want to announce any Aliens details. That a broad enough answer for ya?

    grbxdesign: Syd, Craig and some other artists were involved in the early bulk, blue-sky phase of designing this game. Gearbox needed someone with a visual style similar to Syd's at half the price. My dad is an industrial designer and I was raised on Syd's work, the project is Aliens, so it was an easy "yes" to jump on board.

    My involvement, in film parlance, is more akin to a production designer. I get to dip my fingers into real conceptual design work on occasion, but for the most part, I am translating other ideas into something practical that the level designers can run with.

    grbxdesign: Can't give an exact number of people working on the game right now (the details are confidential and I'm not in a position to divulge them publicly, sorry). Suffice it to say it's in full-swing. Things are being tweaked, fixed, upgraded, what-have-you as is the normal procedure of production.
     
    I'll tell you that I'm designing a hallway for a certain spaceship. There, go crazy.
     
    Keep up the excitement guys. It's a fun property and I hope you all are going to enjoy it!

    grbxdesign: Well, no Nostromo; this is Aliens and is set solidly in that timeframe and universe...57 years after the Nostromo blew up.
     
    The details are still under wraps as far as the visual and experiential elements are concerned so I can't comment upon that at the moment.

    grbxdesign: As far as customization it's too early to say anything. I'm sure those conversations will happen when get further along. I'll keep you posted as that info is cool to disclose.

    New Screenshot (Sort of)

    A new screenshot was discovered at lorinwood.com. Lorin Wood is the Senior Concept Designer at Gearbox Software for ALIENS: Colonial Marines. The screen is actually a similar shot to the one from the Gearbox press pack, but the new one appears to be processed differently and looks more cinematic. Over at the GBX forums, Lorin said that this is his own personal touched up version, but that it is in game.

    Games Radar PS3 Preview

    There is a somewhat new preview for ALIENS: Colonial Marines over at Games Radar. It appears that it was originaly from the Playstation World magazine article though, so if you have read that, then it isn't so new. Anyway, here are a few quotes from the article:
     
    Quote: The game’s story is being written by Battlestar Galactica’s writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle and is set after the events of the Aliens and Alien 3 movies. The game not only features the adrift Sulaco, but also the Fiorina ‘Fury’ 161 prison facility and the derelict alien spacecraft from the original movie as backdrops to the action. One aspect of the story that ties neatly into the Aliens universe is the use of the Weyland Yutani Corporation as an over-arching evil, a puppet-master pulling the strings behind the action. Though your immediate survival against the Sulaco’s alien infestation is your primary concern, the game will build in a conspiracy story behind the gunplay. And who knows, maybe an unexpected betrayal.
     
    Each mission will put you in the space armor of a different marine in the six-man squad. You’ll use commands familiar to Brothers in Arms players to guide your troop through the maze of acid-blasted corridors, trying to stay ahead of the critters. By focusing on one squad member at a time, Gearbox has been able to create an episodic feel to the action. Back stories, plot details and characters gently expand and you’ll get a deeper perspective on the action.     Before you reach for the keyboard and start hurling abuse at Gearbox, this is no casual blaster. There will be more than six episodes to wade through, including some revelations that could affect the Aliens canon. The game builds slowly, emulating the slow burn pace of the movies. Your first foray onto the abandoned USS Sulaco is a tense affair with few aliens to be seen and only the ominous pinging from your handheld motion detector for company.

    CVG Preview for Xbox 360

    Computer and Video games has a new preview on ALIENS: Colonial Marines. It mostly seems to be recycled stuff we have already heard about, but they do talk a lot about coop and also mention that we will be re-visiting Fiorina 'Fury' 161. Here's a quote from the article:-
     
    Quote: Like this month's exceptional Left 4 Dead, Colonial Marines is a four-player co-op game centred around survival: you're constantly under attack and the environments you move through are frequently hiding your enemy. However, whereas Left 4 Dead pitches you into the middle of a nameless American city awash in zombies, Colonial Marines goes for fan-pleasing recreations of the movie quadrilogy's best locations: LV-426, the planet where the Nostromo first discovers the derelict alien ship in the original film; the Sulaco, where Ripley joins up with the marines in Aliens; and Fiorina 'Fury' 161, the prison facility from Alien 3.

    GamePro on Aliens: CM

    Apparently the December issue of the US only magazine Game Pro has a preview article on ALIENS: Colonial Marines. Also, they posted online at their website a 'four ways Colonial Marines will restore order to the Aliens franchise' article yesterday. Here is number four:
     
    Quote: "4. Marine Tough
     
    The marines that you'll be using throughout the game aren't just random, cookie cutter soldiers. They all have their own unique skills and personalities and react to different situations just like a real soldier would. Out of the 12 you can comprise your team of four; some are more likely to panic than other but may wield more powerful guns."

    F.A.Q

    I decided to create a frequently asked questions section, to help answer newcomer questions regarding ACM. So here it is.
     
     
    1. What is ALIENS: Colonial Marines?
    ACM is a squad combat, first person shooter based on James Cameron's movie sequel to ALIEN, ‘ALIENS’. The game apparently focuses on the Colonial Marines that appeared in the movie. Randy Pitchford CEO of Gearbox software said:
    "Our game's about becoming a Colonial Marine, and looking at it from the Colonial Marines' perspective."
     
    2. When is the games release scheduled for?
    The release date on the main Gearbox Software website says:  TBA (To be announced). And SEGA have said they are concentrating on their new AvP game first, which will be released early in 2010. So ALIENS: Colonial Marines wont arrive until mid 2010, at the earliest.
     
    In regards to unofficial release dates, ennui the Gearbox Community Manager had this to say:
    “there's a lot of speculation as to the release date, but until you see Sega and us OFFICIALLY announce a date, on our sites and through the news outlets, don't believe it.”
    And when asked about online store dates, this from botman (Programmer at Gearbox):
    “They pretty much just make up a date so they have something to put on the website to get people to pre-order the game.”
     
    3. What gaming platforms will ACM appear on?
    PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
     
    Though there is also a DS game with the same title name. That version of the game is being developed by Wayforward.

     
    4. How many players will the game support?
    According to the 2008 March (Issue #179) addition of Game Informer, the games main campaign will support 1-4 players cooperative online, with the ability to jump in / drop out at any time, and offline two player split screen.

     
    5. Will there be a online adversarial multiplayer mode?
    At this time it is uncertain. The initial press release said they would be talking more about MP later on down the line.
     
     
    6. Will there be playable aliens in the game?
    Again we don't fully know the answer to this question yet. If there is a competitive multiplayer mode then its very probable there will be playable aliens, but until they talk about MP we cant know for sure. We do know there wont be a single player, playable alien campaign in ACM though, since Gearbox have said they are focussing on the Colonial Marines.
     
     
    7. Which game engine is ACM using?
    A heavily modified version of the Unreal Engine 3. Also Gearbox has adopted Morpheme a middleware animation package for use with UE3.

     
    8. Is this a remake of the cancelled PS2 Aliens Colonial Marines game?
    No. Wieder (Associate Producer) said:
    The game isn't intentionally related to the previous game, but the title was absolutely perfect. It's not an association we're upset to have, as we all wish that game had been able to be finished because it showed promise. But yeah, any similarities are coincidences or just because they are good ideas for an Aliens game.”
     
    9. Will there be any Predators or AvP references in this game?
    No. According to Wieder:
    “This game is 100% Aliens and Colonial Marine goodness.”
     
    10. Who is writing the story?
    The story is a collaboration between Gearbox Software and the talented science fiction writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle who most recently wrote for the Battlestar Galactica TV series.

     
    11. When in the Aliens timeline will the game take place?
    Shortly after Ellen Ripley’s death in ALIEN 3. According to Stephen Palmer (Producer):
    “Our game is set after the events of [the movie] Alien 3, which takes place very shortly after the end of Aliens. Our goal is to make a game that answers some of the questions from those two movies, and picks up the story basically right after the squad of marines was wiped out on LV-426 [the moon where humans first encountered the Aliens].”
    In the 360 magazine (issue #35) preview, it states:
    "The opening of the game, taking place around the time of Alien 3 in the series timeline, will see you lead a squad of US Colonial Marines onto the USS Sulaco, to investigate the fate of the crew who all seem to have disappeared, leaving their cryo-chambers empty and the ship floating in space."
     
    12. How accurate to the movies will A:CM be?
    Gearbox Software is well known for their faithful recreation of the source material they are working from as can be evidenced in their previous series of authentic WW2 titles, 'Brothers in Arms'. With Aliens: Colonial Marines, Gearbox have been able to work with people that worked on the actual movies, like the well known concept artist Syd Mead. In the 360 magazine (Issue #39), Gearbox's Executive Vice President and game director Brian Martel said:
    “You know, it's always hard to keep everyone happy. At Gearbox, we have some of the greatest Alien fans right here. As long as we treat the brand sincerely and respectfully, that will reflect in the end result. I think when the players see the story and the game as a whole they will appreciate our efforts, so I'm not really worried. For example, I own several props from the movie, storyboards and probably every single Alien novel and 'making of book ever published. I really think all those hardcore Alien fans out there can rest easy: we are not going to disappoint you: a really awesome Alien game is what you'll get.”
    When asked if Gearbox had worked closely with any of the original movie filmmakers, Martel answered:
    “Not that closely! I mean, we are in contact with Fox, and they've provided a lot of material. We work closely with some of the special effects people at Amalgamated Dynamics, who did the special effects for Alien3, Alien: Resurrection and Alien vs Predator. We went and talked to them to get a better understanding of how the aliens work, and how they would design the aliens for a game. The writers' contributions were also essential in helping us create an experience that is as close to Hollywood as it gets. James Cameron hasn't been round for a chat yet, but hey, we'll keep knocking at his door. You never know...”
    Finally, Gearbox's CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that Brian Martel did get the chance to sit down with Ridley Scott (the original ALIEN films director, and view his storyboards and discuss the whole back story of where he thinks the Alien came from. Additionally:-
     
    - Fox has given Gearbox access to all the original mixed and un-mixed sound recordings from the movies.
     
    - Gearbox went back and accurately matched the film grain and colour tone to recreate the original look of the second movies film print.
     
    - They have constructed their own real working M41A Pulse Rifle from a M1A1 Thompson submachine gun, just like James Cameron’s movie version.
     
    - The Gearbox offices are brimming with Aliens memorabilia and artwork as can be seen in Episode 13 of the Jace Hall Show.

    The Jace Hall Show Visits Gearbox

    Jace Hall was invited to Gearbox studios and got to check out a couple of Gearbox games, one being Borderlands and the other being Aliens: Colonial Marines. I embedded the video below so check it out. You can see Randy Pitchford giving Jace a tour of the studio and watch him getting to shoot Gearbox's real working pulse rifle. And not forgetting a quick sneak peak of footage from the game, camera filmed over the shoulder, so it isn’t the best quality but it is looking pretty sweet in my opinion.

    Games Abyss Preview

    Another Aliens: Colonial Marines preview can be found here at Games Abyss. This one is very similar to the last one, but it does talk about how cool the alien queen is looking in game. 
     
    Quote: "No word on the final roster of the different Alien species we can expect. From footage we have seen facehuggers, the standard black acid-blooded creeps, as well as a giant queen, are represented in a frightening level of detail."

    OXM Preview

    There is a new preview at oxmonline.com.
     
    Quote: “Our game is set after the events of [the film] Alien 3, which takes place very shortly after the end of Aliens,” explains Stephen Palmer, the game’s producer at Gearbox. “Our goal is to make a game that answers some of the questions from those two movies, and picks up the story basically right after the squad of marines was wiped out on LV-426 [the moon where humans first encountered the Aliens].”
     
    Playing as a squad of four colonial marines, each with a unique personality and class, you’ve been ordered to investigate the USS Sulaco, the spaceship that Ripley used to escape at the end of Aliens, and that became derelict in Alien 3. “Since Aliens is our closest influence, we’ve strived for a level of authenticity to the films,” says Palmer. “The look of the game is directly inspired by the movies, down to the film grain and lighting. We’ve hired Syd Mead [designer of the Sulaco] to go back and create new concepts based on artwork that he made over 20 years ago — just so we can see what his vision was for the other areas of the Sulaco.”
     
    Sadly no new screenshots and there’s not that much else new in the preview, but it does mention something about the unannounced multiplayer being a competitive MP mode.

    shacknews Interview Randy Pitchford

    Shack News have interviewed Randy Pitchford on their upcoming games. Randy spoke a little on Aliens: Colonial Marines. Here is a portion of what he had to say:
     
    Randy Pitchford: "One thing that's cool is some of the people we've been able to work with to help us [on Aliens]. The guys that write the Battlestar Galactica series, Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, they wrote our script. They're amazing guys. They gave us a lot, too. We could make a whole season of TV with the stuff they gave us. [laughs] We profited from the writer's strike, let's just put it that way. We talked with a lot of people, but those guys are so good.

    And then a lot of the concept guys that helped make the movies. Like [Aliens concept artist] Syd Mead, that guy walks on water. And to be able to go to his studio, his house, and then have him draw a bunch of stuff. "Here's when I designed the Sulaco back when we made the first movie. Here's the original artwork. You want a copy, Brian?" And Brian's like, "Yes."

    And now he's designing all the new stuff, because the Sulaco's a big ship and we only saw a bit of it, so you get the guy who designed it to design the rest of it. And he's awesome, he designed so much stuff. And then like [concept artists] Keith Thompson, Craig Mullins.. anybody who knows these names knows what we're talking about. This is no joke.

    It's a big team. And we're also working with people from all over the world. We've been working with a lot of amazing talent at other studios. I don't know how much of that will be used in PR, but there's a lot of people who care about this franchise. The opportunity to build a dropship, or build a pulse rifle, or build a smart gun, that's a pretty cool opportunity--a lot of artists would want to do that. So we have our core Gearbox team, but we're also finding a lot of folks around the industry now, guys who are on top of their game."

    "GameTap: Will the game extend from the movies? Will you see scenes from the movies in the game or where there be parallels that coincide with events from the movies?
     
    Randy Pitchford: The game and the story of Aliens is original, but there will be parallels that feel familiar. We have seen the movie. We know what it looked like to go in on a dropship. We have never done that ourselves, interactively, but we know what that looked like. And if we don't touch some of those things and have the movies as part of the experience, then I don't think we're doing the right job there. So of course we have to make sure that's part of the promise. That's about all I can say right now, but read the latest Game Informer for more on it."
     
    "GameTap: For fans of the series who have seen the Alien creatures take on various permutations and transformations whether it's in comic books or the toy figures, what will you bring to the table. I mean, remember the toy chain where there was a bull or a dog and a snake alien?
     
    Randy Pitchford: Yes, the canon of Alien. You remember that first alien in the first movie in that derelict ship, and there was a giant creature, the space jockey, from which the alien burst from its chest? What was that guy all about? He was huge. And what came out of him? These are really interesting questions. Brian, my partner, got to sit down with Ridley Scoot (director of the first Alien movie) and Ridley pulled out this book and blew the dust off of it. Ridley opened it up and it was his original sketches and original hand-drawn storyboards for Alien. So Brian sat down and got the whole backstory on Alien and the space jockey and where the Aliens come from. We're going to get to mess with some of that."
